From Magical Towns to Hidden Gems

Welcome to this space about Culture, History, and Daily Life in Bahía de Banderas! I'm Moisés Guardado, a history student at the University of Zacatecas and a collaborator at Luna Tours & Hiking. This space will be dedicated to exploring cultural diversity, deeply rooted traditions, the rich history from pre-Hispanic times to the present day, as well as the daily life and current affairs of this beautiful region. From music, dance, art, and gastronomy to historical monuments, archaeological sites, and contemporary life, we will delve into every facet that makes Bahía de Banderas a unique place. In this first article, we will talk about Magical Towns.

In Mexico, Magical Towns are places with symbols and legends, steeped in history, and often the setting for significant events in the country. These places reflect the national identity in every corner, exuding a magic that is experienced through their tourist attractions. The Magical Towns program was initiated by the federal government in 2001 and currently has 177 towns throughout Mexico; to hold the title, a thorough evaluation by the Federal Tourism Department is required, which will grant the Magical Towns certification.

In the state of Nayarit, the closest to Bahía de Banderas is Sayulita, a charming coastal town with a bohemian vibe that captures the relaxed essence of Mexico. Sayulita is an ideal place to explore the mystical depth of Wirrarika (Huichol) art, with its colorful and meaningful art reflecting the worldview and spiritual connection of this indigenous culture. Additionally, Sayulita offers delicious cuisine that combines Mexican snacks with exquisite seafood dishes, providing visitors with a unique culinary experience.

Visiting a Magical Town like Sayulita is not only an opportunity to enjoy its natural and cultural beauties but also to immerse oneself in the richness and diversity that Mexico has to offer. Sayulita is more than just a tourist destination; it is a surfer's town, where people come to learn, practice, and experience surfing. Here, you can meet great surfers from Mexico, who add an exciting touch to the experience of exploring this charming place. Sayulita, with its relaxed atmosphere, vibrant community, and surfing scene, is a gem that captures the dynamic and welcoming essence of Mexico.

In the case of Jalisco, the nearest Magical Town is San Sebastián del Oeste, a small town in the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Strolling through its streets and admiring the typical architecture of a Mexican town transports us to Mexico of three centuries ago, as this town seems to have been trapped in time. Its 17th-century temple and 18th-century cemetery, both steeped in history and legends, connect us with the region's past.

Furthermore, on the way to San Sebastián del Oeste, you can stop at agave plantations to learn about the tequila production process, an enriching experience for lovers of this iconic Mexican drink. And we cannot forget about coffee, a passion for those like me with a coffee-loving soul. San Sebastián's coffee is known for its full body and soul, offering a unique sensory experience that perfectly complements the visit to this Magical Town.

I want to thank you for taking the time to read this article and join me on this journey through the magic of Magical Towns and the cultural richness of Mexico. Your support and participation are essential to make this space enriching and dynamic. I invite you to share your topics of interest and suggestions for future publications; I will be delighted to research and write about what you are passionate about. I hope this reading about Magical Towns and the two closest to us has broadened your perspective and sparked your curiosity to explore more deeply the diversity and charm of our country.

I enjoyed reading this article. I have heard of “Pueblos Magicos,” now I understand what they are. I have visited Sayulita and San Sebastián. They are truly beautiful. Moises, I hope you will write about more magical towns in future articles, so I can plan my next adventure.
